How to learn the violin?
Hi! I’m interested in learning to play the violin but I don’t know where to start. I’m a total beginner and don’t have any idea on the cost for the violin lessons. Thanks in advance.

From here I wonder nobody can help you start. I think you should look for a teacher (live) or at least an on line course thru the Net (don´t believe it would be so good though). In the meantime you may start trying to get some sounds from the instrument by your own, but I wouldn´t recommend this, ’cause violin is TOO difficult for a beginner to find out and reach any real toned note!

Ruth asks…
Keep trying the violin or move on?
So, I decided to start taking violin lessons about 6 months ago. I rent my instrument and can return it at any time. Here’s my issue.
I absolutely despise practice. I dread it. It’s not the actual practice itself that I dread but the fact that I still sound horrific even after 6 months. While I never expected to be playing Chopin or something, I guess I figured I’d at least sound less like a beginner with regular practice. However, I still screech regularly and it’s very disheartening. I love listening to the violin but I really don’t like playing it at all. I’ve been considering trying a different instrument that is more forgiving for beginners (piano, harp or something) but I just can’t decide. I don’t want to spend 4+ years before I sound like anything more than a beginner. Suggestions?

As an experienced violinist-both performing and teaching-
I would suggest giving yourself a little more time. Violin does take some time to get the hang of, but if you practice carefully everyday for at least a half hour, you will be able to make a nice sound. The more you practice (carefully) the faster you will improve. As I always remind my students:
Practice does not make perfect. It makes permanent. The more you practice incorrectly, the harder it will be to fix. Make sure you have a teacher who is able to help you through these issues.
Of course, the instrument itself might be making matters worse for you. If the instrument is of a very low quality, then it makes it nearly impossible to learn on. Even a highly trained violinist might not be able to get the really bad violins to sound any good.
What exactly is your problem? Have you mastered the bow hold? Having a proper position will assist you in producing a good sound. It might be a good idea to practice some open string exercises, and simply concentrate on the tone you are producing. Analyze what is happening. If you can make it sound nice, keep repeating. This will become second nature eventually.

I will be adding more technical articles as time goes on. You might find them helpful. There is also a section for student resources.
Good luck and don’t give up!

I am taking lessons for the violin but I think I suck at it?
I am barely on my 3rd lesson and I got down the twinkle twinkle variations at least 2 of them.. ONLY. Mississippi stop stop, and run pony run. I can do that easily..almost. But when my teacher tried to teach me the E3 EE E1E EE for “fun” I was very confused even though it is a very easy thing. Well, we then tried the Boil them cabbage and same thing.. i kept being so confused but the reading part of the music was EASY..
The hard part for me it to keep my fingers flowing on the notes and pressing firmly on the bow. Once I get the rythm i mess up and if i try to go too much i mess up again!..:(
She is using the Suzuki method even though I’m an adult already… but I do not know what to do ![]()
I spoke to another music professor and he suggested i use the book Strictly strings and learn with him.
What do you think?
My current teacher is very nice but she’s only taught elementary students while the other professor teaches at the University for beginners.
And for my 3rd week, am I doing terribly? I can hold the violin and bow good but.. :/
I won’t give up I guess I just need some input.

Okay, Okay~……….The deal is this. If you love it/like, want to play it and have fun later, you will not give up now. Violin is difficult…………!! Everyone knows this…Ya just gotta get through the difficult (read BORING) stuff, like hand position, learning to sight-read, bow position, vibrato, blah blah…..and then youll get a payoff…..
3 weeks…..When I had three weeks in parents were ready to kick me out of the house….Keep goin’
